Today’s quote:
.
“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.” – Jen Sincero
.
Being present is a real hard thing for me somethings because the anticipation for tomorrow is very high. But what I know is that when we don’t live in the present, we tend to miss out on all the awesome things happening right in front of you. The more I talk about this exact subject, the more I understand how common this issue is for many people.
.
After being in the fitness industry for over 12 years, there is many goals that are out there. Some of those goals are weight loss, increase muscles, chiseled abs, getting swimsuit ready and to just get skinny again. When these are only things athletes focus on this becomes their obsession and also their identity. In others word they do not have anything else on their minds and very much so sometimes miss out on things.
.
I have seen weight loss take peoples identity. The common story is the man/woman has always been over weight her entire life, she has some many great skills and talents but all she focus on is how fat she is and how everyone doesn’t approve of her (well at least that’s what she thinks). Day in and day out she dreams of the day she is 50 pounds lighter and how she has all these friends that approve of her. What she is missing is that the people around her do approve of her and see all these skills and talents she has. This is a key example of being anxious and living in the future.
.
The other example is the guy who didn’t finish college or ever hold a solid relationship. He has had girlfriends before but he has such lack of self confidence that he’s never able to be there for anyone because he’s so worried about himself. His past is always haunting him no matter where he goes. The things that are holding him back is his past and his past failures. The only reason he has managed to not get ahead or beat his past is because he can not shake his past. Once he is able to let go of all past beliefs, he will be able to forgive himself and move forward in progress.
.
The truth is that many of us are either living in the future or the past and for some reason not just in the present. There are teaching out there that state living in the present is living stagnant and not living forward. In this belief, I will agree to a degree, but only because to grow we must be able to dream. If we are able to dream we then have goals to work towards. When we have goals to work towards, we have a purpose every day we wake up.
.
Regarding living in the present in a healthy measure is so key. Why? When we are able to experience the present, we are able to enjoy all the cool things happening every day. This can be going to your kids sports games and just watching and cheering. This would be you not worrying about work, weight loss, things that need to be done at the house, or (fill in the blank). When you are able to enjoy what is happening right now, you tend to respect these moments a lot more. You tend to hold these times sacred. You get protective about these moments.
.
This has been an on going process for me personally. My stress and worry is the future, so I’m always thinking ahead and what type of program I’m design or when I’m going to start a new program at my gyms. I then get so locked in these new ideas that I forget to enjoy the now because I’m so far in the future that I begin to stress out. I am so blessed because I have wife who is really good at reminding me to be more present and that whatever I’m “stressing” about will be there tomorrow. It has taken me some time but I am totally understanding this. Ultimately, I don’t want to fail so that is why I over think everything.
.
So where are you today? Are you more in the past, present or in the future?
.
Regardless where you are, picking a destination where you desire to be at is really key. This will in turn help you understand you and what your ultimate goal is. This is how we self dissect ourselves and make ourselves stronger. The more we grow in learning about “us”, the more aware we are.
.
In my experience after being married for 12 years and 3 kids later, being present is the best. I see the people around me benefit and my overall stress levels are less. May you find your state and totally embrace your full on desires.
.
Our Daily 3 Pillars:
– Fitness (15 minutes): We will use HIIT (hight intensity interval training) as our vehicle to increase our fitness and get a better bang for our buck. Don’t be surprised when results start showing up faster than normal.
– Quiet time (5 minutes): Some call this meditation, prayer time or times of gratitude. This is where we pause from all the rat racing and allow for peace to enter.
– Personal Investment (10 minutes): Personal development. This is you investing in you. Whether its reading, listening to a podcast, listening or sitting a reading a book (I’ll list a few of my favorites below).
.
TODAY’S WOD – (Day 20)
